How to play

Four ways to train your ear. Pick any one from the home screen.

Match

Listen to a hidden target sound, then move the sliders until your sound matches it. Submit to see how close you got, with the answer revealed. Harder levels add more sliders to control.

Describe

Hear an engine-generated sound and answer a quick question about it: brighter or darker, soft or sharp attack, and so on. Each answer comes with a short explanation.

Playground

A free sandbox: build a sound from scratch, play it across the keyboard, start from a preset, and share what you make.

Glossary

The vocabulary of tone color, with paired hear-it demos for the core terms so the words stick.

Reading the charts

Four pictures of a sound show up across the modes: the waveform (its vibration shape), the harmonic spectrum (where its energy sits across low and high harmonics), the envelope (how it starts, holds, and fades), and pitch over time (how the pitch holds or wavers, for vibrato). The glossary explains each one, and every term there draws the chart that best shows it.

Keep it warm

Timbre Match is free to play, with no ads and no tracking cookies. Contributions are voluntary and unlock nothing: no perks, no features, no account, and no change to how you may use it. If it is useful to you, you can contribute to help cover its running costs.
